Welsh self catering holidays

Enjoy castles and countryside in Wales
Wales is a great destination for short breaks and family holidays, thanks to its combination of stunning coastline, rugged national parks and stylish modern cities. Add in some of the UK's best golf courses, a selection of medieval castles and great restaurants dishing up fine local produce, there really is something for everyone.

The country also has a huge range of holiday accommodation, with the availability of everything from luxury hotels and self catering cottages to log cabins and inns meaning there is somewhere to suit every budget. All you need to worry about is what type of getaway you want.

Monmouthshire - best for castles
If you have an interest in history, try booking a holiday cottage in Monmouthshire for your next break. The beautiful countryside around the market towns of Abergavenny, Chepstow and Monmouth are packed with landmarks that tell the story of the area's fascinating past. The ruins of the castles of Grosmont, White and Skenfrith date back to the 13th century, while Llanthony Priory and Abergavenny Castle are even older. Medieval Caldicot Castle is worth adding to your itinerary if you have children, as there are lots of fun events for youngsters in the surrounding country park.

Vale of Glamorgan - best for golf
There are more than 200 courses in Wales, making it perfect for a short break for golfers. Choose high-quality self catering cottages in the Vale of Glamorgan for your getaway and you will be close to The Vale Resort, which has two championship standard courses set in 650 acres of wonderful green countryside. You could also tee the ball up at nearby St Mary's and the Southerndown links at Ogmore-by-Sea.

Cardiff - best for city breaks
The Welsh capital has everything you could wish for in a city break, including some superb restaurants in the centre and at Cardiff Bay's Mermaid Quay. There are plenty of shops to choose from, with the usual selection of chain stores complemented by independent boutiques, vintage clothing retailers and jewellers. If you wish to do some sightseeing, try a trip to the fairytale-style Castell Coch or take a tour of the locations featured in Doctor Who.

Pembrokeshire - best for sea views
The scenery in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is among the finest in Europe, with the cliff-top paths providing panoramic views over the beaches and sea below. Book farm breaks in pet friendly properties here and you can look forward to spending days walking on sections of the 186-mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path and spotting wildlife. The coastline is home to grey seals, dolphins and porpoises, along with rare birds such as skylarks and choughs.

Powys - best for outdoor pursuits
Powys boasts some stunning natural features, which make it perfect for an activity holiday. Book breaks in pet friendly properties and you can take your dogs as you go walking in the Brecon Beacons National Park or along Glyndwr's Way. You could also try exploring underground at the Ogof Craig a Ffynnon cave or have a go at kayaking on Llangorse Lake.

Carmarthenshire - best for beaches
If your idea of the perfect getaway is to do little more than relax on sandy beaches during the day and eat wonderful local produce in the evening, Carmarthenshire should be the destination for your next break. Choose child friendly accommodation here and you can explore rock pools in the shadows of dramatic cliffs at Pendine and sunbathe on Llansteffan Beach, before tucking into saltmarsh lamb or sewin at a local restaurant.

Ceredigion Bay - best for family holidays
Opt for farm breaks in the area around Ceredigion Bay and you will have a choice of activities for all the family. You could take the children walking or cycling through the stunning countryside, to try archery or rock climbing at one of the local activity centres, or head to the coast for a dolphin watching trip. Alternatively, stay in a holiday cottage on the outskirts of Aberystwyth to experience the delights of a traditional seaside resort. As well as days at the beach, you could take in a show at Aberystwyth Arts Centre and go for a ride on the Vale of Rheidol Steam Railway.

Anglesey - best for water sports
The Isle of Anglesey just off the North Wales coast is a real hotspot for water sports. Stay in child friendly accommodation in Holyhead and you can go body boarding or learn to sail with the kids. Or you may prefer a log cabin to use as a base for kitesurfing lessons or scuba diving trips to explore the reefs and many wrecks just off the coastline. Diving equipment can be hired from a centre in Holyhead.
