Co. Down holiday cottages
County Down borders the Irish sea to the east and south. If you're in search of tremendous sea views then it's a good place to seek out self-catering holiday cottages. Two peninsulas, the Ards and Lecale dominate the county. As with so much of Ireland, the sense of history is strong with signs of the 12th Century Norman invasion still visible. Part of County Down is known as the 'Bronte homeland' as this is where Patrick, the father of the Bronte sisters hailed from. County Down is a good place for family holidays with much to do. There's the Kirkistown car and motorcycle circuit, the Somme Heritage Centre (which looks back at Ireland's role in the First World War) and the Mount Stewart House and Gardens, home to exquisite gardens alleged to be amongst the finest in Europe. Two rail networks serve the county, but a car remains the most convenient form of transport. Plans for a ferry service linking County Down and County Louth are underway.
