London is one of the best places around for tourists. Where you can for example visit the ancient Tower of London and learn about the famous denizens of its dungeons, or stand among hosts of celebrities at Madame Tussauds! The unearthly architecture of St Paul's Cathedral, and the fascinating historical sites such as HMS Belfast and the Cutty Sark are second to none! What is more London, is home to some breathtaking art galleries and museums such as the Tate Modern, the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum.

In the Bloomsbury area of London, near to where the famous group of literary and artistic thinkers and writers known as the Bloomsbury Group had their apartments, you can visit the British Museum. This fantastic edifice houses everything from modern abstract art to ancient African religious relics. You can spend hours exploring the exhibits on display. The museum is totally free to enter, making it an ideal place to visit when you are in London. If it is a fine day, why not take a picnic and sit in one of the many public gardens in Bloomsbury? These gardens, many of which have rare flowers on show, are a lovely and relaxed place to eat. Pop down to Greenwich for the day and you can visit the historic tea clipper the Cutty Sark before viewing the astounding collection of scientific and astronomical instruments on display at the Royal Observatory nearby. Why not end your day with a visit to the child friendly Natural History Museum, which has a number of fun interactive exhibits?

The Westminster area of London is a wonderful place to spend an hour or three!
From sophisticated eateries to glamorous bars, with everything from a royal residence to the exciting art galleries nearby, the Westminster area is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon, or even better a whole day. Here you can for example stand outside the world famous Buckingham Palace and experience the regular 'changing of the guard ceremony'. Move on to gaze at the resplendent statues that dominate Trafalgar Square before wandering around the breathtaking National Gallery nearby and enjoying tea and cake in its cafe. A stone's throw away from Buckingham Palace itself is the magnificent Queen's Gallery. Home to treasures old and new, this art gallery also hosts a number of carefully selected temporary exhibitions throughout the year which aim to showcase and explain some amazing paintings and artifacts.

Stroll down the Strand and take in the riverside attractions!
London's Strand area really does have it all. Covent Garden nearby is a magnificent place to go shopping, with the Neal's Yard area housing many out of the way shops and restaurants where you can buy everything from weird and wonderful teas to tasty rare cheeses. Explore Shaftesbury avenue, which links the vibrant theatre and nightclub districts of Covent Garden and Soho with the famous shopping areas of Picadilly and Oxford Circus. On the Strand itself, you can saunter in to Somerset House, the renowned record office. Somerset House contains a number of wonderful attractions, such as an artisan restaurant and deli, the awe-inspiring Courtauld Gallery, in the winter time a fun and family friendly ice rink! The river is just a few minutes' walk away and from here you can view some of the iconic sights of the city, including Big Ben and the London Eye.

Staying near to the great attractions of London couldn't be easier!
There are a vast number of hotels, B&Bs, short stay apartments and other forms of accommodation available throughout London, making it extremely easy to find a place to stay close by to the main attractions you wish to visit. A central location is best if you wish to be closest to the largest number of attractions, so why not book a hotel on the Strand or in Covent Garden? Wherever you stay, though, all of the great places to visit mentioned here are easily reached by the London Underground: journeys by underground train will in most cases take a matter of minutes.
